For week one of my 2024 Art challenge, I wanted to truly challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. Inspired by the vibrant wildlife of Guyana, South America, where I currently reside as an expat, I’ve chosen to recreate the majestic beauty of a Blue and Gold Macaw captured in a photograph taken by my husband last year.
Before diving straight into the canvas, I spent time analyzing the photograph and making preliminary sketches. Capturing the essence of the macaw’s posture, the details of its feathers, and the play of light and shadow were crucial in ensuring a faithful representation. The goal was not just to replicate the image but to infuse it with my personal artistic touch.
I had to keep in mind that while I wanted to create a piece I loved, I did not want to spend too much time going over meticulous detail. This challenge was not to create the best pieces but to allow myself to let go of the high expectations and have fun experimenting.
For this project, I opted to use acrylic paints. My favorite purchase of last year has been an Acrylic paint set of 60 colors. It truly has all the shades I would ever need! The versatility of acrylics allows for layering and blending, and it dries quickly, making it suitable for my week-by-week challenge.
As I wrap up week one, the Blue and Gold Macaw stands proudly on my canvas, a testament to the power of creativity and the joy that comes from embracing new challenges. Join me on this art-filled journey as we venture into week two, ready to discover what the canvas holds for us next. Until then, happy creating!
