Shukr: Gratitude in Islam

Shukr: Gratitude in Islam

“O you who have believed, eat from the good [i.e., lawful] things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.” (2:172)

Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions we can cultivate. It shifts our focus from what is missing to what is already present. It softens the heart, lifts the spirit, and brings us back to the present moment. In a fast-paced world that often emphasizes what we lack, shukr—gratitude—is a reminder of the blessings that surround us every single day.

In Islam, shukr is not just encouraged; it is essential. The Qur’an is filled with verses that remind us of the importance of being grateful, both in times of ease and in moments of difficulty. Gratitude is a form of worship. It deepens our relationship with Allah and allows us to witness His mercy in everything around us.

For me, shukr is a lifestyle—a spiritual practice that turns even the smallest moments into acts of remembrance. It is how I ground myself. It is how I reconnect. Choosing this word for my calligraphy piece was an invitation to pause and remember. To appreciate. To give thanks not only with my tongue, but with my heart and actions.

The Power of Gratitude:

  • It increases blessings, as promised in the Qur’an:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]” (14:7)
  • It softens hardship by helping us see Allah’s wisdom and mercy in all things.
  • It transforms worship into love, and routine into reflection.

How to Practice Shukr Daily:

  • Reflect on the countless blessings you’ve been given, even the unseen ones.
  • Thank Allah in your prayers, not just for what you have, but for what you’ve been protected from.
  • Use what you’ve been given—health, time, skills—in service of good and mankind.

SHUKR, my latest calligraphy piece

This piece is a personal reminder and a spiritual anchor. To me, it is more than paint on paper—it’s a quiet act of dhikr. Every time I see it, I’m reminded to slow down and reflect on all the ways Allah has been generous, patient, and kind. To thank him Him for everything I have been blessed with and everything I have been protected from. It’s a visual way to say: Alhamdulillah for today, for breath, for beauty, for another chance.

Creating this piece was an act of gratitude in itself. Through it, I hope others feel inspired to recognize the gifts in their own lives—both the obvious and the hidden.

“And remember when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favor…’” (Qur’an 14:7)
