Tawakkul: Letting Go and Trusting in Allah

In a world that often teaches us to control everything, tawakkul reminds us to surrender. It invites us to let go of the illusion of control and place our trust where it truly belongs — in Allah.

Tawakkul (توكل), an Arabic word often translated as “reliance” or “trust in Allah,” is a central concept in Islam. It teaches us that while we must take action and strive for good, the outcome is never in our hands. Tawakkul is about doing our best and then releasing the rest — knowing that Allah is the best of planners.

For me, tawakkul is a source of deep peace. It’s what carries me through uncertainty. It reminds me that I am held, even when things don’t go according to my plan. Choosing this word for my calligraphy piece was a way to express this surrender artistically — to capture the calm that comes when the heart fully lets go and leans into divine wisdom.

The Power of Tawakkul in Islam:

  • It teaches balance — taking action while fully trusting in the outcome Allah has written.
  • It calms anxiety by reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles.
  • It strengthens faith and deepens our connection with the Creator.

“And whoever puts their trust in Allah — then He alone is sufficient for them.” (Qur’an 65:3)

How to Practice Tawakkul Daily:

  • Start every task with bismillah and end it with a heartfelt dua.
  • Take intentional action — work, plan, strive — but release attachment to results.
  • Remind yourself of Allah’s names: Al-Wakeel (The Trustee), Al-Hakeem (The Wise), Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful).

TAWAKKUL, my latest calligraphy piece

This artwork is a visual dhikr. It’s a reminder to breathe deeply, to trust the unseen, and to know that what is meant for you will never miss you. Every time I see this piece, I’m reminded that surrender isn’t weakness — it’s the highest form of strength.

It’s my way of saying: I did my part, now I leave the rest to Allah.

Whether you’re facing a major life decision, navigating uncertainty, or just trying to stay grounded, tawakkul offers the kind of trust that can hold you steady.

What does tawakkul mean to you?
